A minimum of 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
